Checkur Joins Sussex Coaching Staff

The Sussex Athletic Department is proud to annouce the addition of Erik Checkur to the Sussex coaching staff. He will be the Assistant Coach and Goalkeeping Coach for the men's and women's soccer programs.  A graduate of High Point Regional High School, Checkur played for Sussex during the 2015 and 2016 seasons under Head Coach Frank Vernacchio. Erik started and played in 25 games during his career at Sussex and achieved a 15-9-1 record. He made 128 saves and compiled a 1.67 goals against average, while earning 5 shutouts. Checkur was named to the NJCAA All Region XIX 2nd Team.

After Sussex, Checkur moved on to Rowan University for the 2017 season, where he started 15 games for the Profs. He finished the season with a 12-2-1 record, compiling 57 saves. Ranked second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, Checkur recorded a 0.63 goals against average, 86.4% shot save percentage, and 6 shutouts. The season's performance earned him ALL NJAC Honorable Mention.

Head Coach Frank Vernacchio was full of praise for his former player, and now, colleague. "We are extremely excited to have Erik join our coaching staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge about the position (Goalkeeper) and knows our culture and standards. Having someone like Erik on our staff will help take our program to the next level."
