Sussex Defense Steps Up in Delaware

The Sussex Skylander lacrosse program started their season with a loss to Nassau, the top team in the nation, on February 21st.

Two postponed games forced the 'Landers to wait a few weeks before traveling to Delaware to take on Del Tech in a Region 19 contest. The break between games showed.

Poor shooting, sloppy offensive possessions, and a hot Del Tech goalie had Sussex down 5-3 at the half. Freshman Alex Husenjnovic and Nate Melnick created some soring opportunities for Sussex with Husenjnovic hitting the back of the net twice, and Melnick assisting on both and scoring one of his own.

Sussex owned the second half. Two goals from Luke Wilson, and one from Cody Cooper sealed the game. The first win of the season gets the 'Landers to 1-1.

The Sussex defense didn't allow Del Tech to score in the games final 30 minutes. Close defenders Matt Bruno, Lou Merlino, Mike D'Arco and Dion Meadows caused problems for the Del Tech attack causing several turnovers and creating transition opportunities. Defensive midfielders Cam Hill and Jayden Ortiz were solid in their second career start.

Freshman goalie Liam MacClugage ended the game with 17 saves.

Husenjnovic finished with 2 goals and 2 assists, Melnick scored once and assisted twice, Wilson hit for two goals on the day while 2-way midfielder Cody Cooper scored once.

Sussex hits the road again on March 22nd to take on Williamson. The game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
