Sussex Loses to Essex in Region Finals

On Saturday, October 28,  the women's soccer team travelled to Conshohocken, PA, to participate in the NJCAA Division 1 Region XIX Women's Soccer Tournament Finals.  The SCCC women fought hard and valiantly, but succumbed to Essex CC, Newark, NJ,  1-0.  The game was exciting on a blustery day in Conshohocken and the score was deadlocked at 0-0 until the 80th minute when Essex found the back of the net.  The SCCC Ladies defense played outstanding, once again, led by All Region XIX player Eden Brown (England).  However, the big surprise of the day for SCCC was the play of back up goalkeeper Emily Martinez (Hopatcong).  Emily was pressed into action, due to injury to SCCC Goalkeeper, Katie Bertoa, (Wallkill) and Emily came up big.  So big, in fact, Emily was named the Defensive Player of the Game and for her efforts, was awarded the Defensive Player of the Game plaque.  Martinez stopped shot after shot throughout the game to keep the Skylanders in the ball game.  Way to go Emily!  With the runner up finish in the Region XIX playoffs, the Skylanders advance to play this weekend in the NJCAA District Tournament at Essex CC in a 4 team tournament, beginning on Saturday, November 4, and ending on Sunday, November 5, for a right to receive a berth to the NJCAA National tournament in FL.
