Sussex Defeated by Essex

The Sussex women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker against Essex CC in a 1-0 game with the game winning goal being scored with 1:33 left by Lyla Lionel.  In a very even, physical contest Sussex came to life in the second half, taking advantage of the space left by the Essex defense.  With Sussex controlling the possession of the game, Essex relied on counter attacks with their pacey forwards to create their chances, and Sussex goalkeeper Emily Martinez had to be alert.  She ended the game with 8 saves.  Essex scored the game winning goal off such a counter attack with 90 seconds remaining to claim the victory.  Head coach Frank Vernacchio was positive after the result, saying "It's a tough loss to take because I thought that we deserved more from the game.  We controlled the second half, but couldn't take advantage of our opportunities, which hurt us.  I am proud with how the girls played today and we are looking forward to meeting Essex again in the playoffs."

Next up for the Skylanders is the Community College of Rhode Island in Rhode Island on October 6.
