History in the making

Sussex County Community College made history yesterday. Despite the pandemic Sussex wrestling has been hard at work trying to get its first year off the ground and running. It's been a tough year to try and start a wrestling program.  The program held its first practices in September of 2020 they were no contact practices. The program has come a long way since then and this Saturday managed to send two of its wrestlers Taylan Zafis and Tom Hubmaster to Gloucester County Community College for its first matches of the year.  Against Rowan College Tom and Taylan both had tough tests against two wrestlers who made it to the blood rounds of nationals last year. Tom lost a major decision 14-0 to Jaden Roberts, but managed to ride him out for a full period and came close to hitting a big move in the third. Taylan lost 12-4 to Curtis Thomas ,but proved to be a tough test for Curtis as he gave him everything he could handle. Against Camden Taylan made program history by collecting the programs first win a 10-3 decision over Camden Counties Owen Donahue. Tom lost a 6-3 decision to Camden's County's Joseph Teguia in a close fought match that came down to the final period. Coach Burdge is quoted "Our guys really got tested today I think they showed they can hang with the best wrestlers in the area. I think we are small adjustments away from really being able to hang with the best in the Country at this level. I can't wait to get back to the drawing board next practice."
