A Message from Coach Shortway

As coaches, we "coach" to win the game, but our real purpose is to teach life lessons to enrich the lives of our athletes.

There have been so many losses in recent months. With a heavy heart of sadness, I inform you that Barry Mascari died on Monday after a lengthy battle with COVID-19. Barry leaves his wife, Jane, adult children Matthew and Janine, and my Aunt Dot, who is a 100 years young.

Barry's mother is my grandmother's sister.

Barry chaired the graduate counselor education program at Kean University. He leaves a legacy as a national leader within the counseling field as well as a reputation for kindness and compassion with his many relatives, friends, and students.

My cousin, Debbie O'Connell provides a tribute to "Cousin" Barry in the following video. https://www.facebook.com/debbie.oconnell.positive/videos/10218722960319123/UzpfSTEwNTI3Mjc1OTI6MzA2MDYxMTI5NDk5NDE0OjEwOjA6MTU5MDk5NDc5OTozNDUxMzI0MDA2NjE3MTU2Mzc5/

Debbie writes, "Lessons from J. Barry Mascari, my cousin fought for months against COVID 19. Live in his honor by instilling his qualities: be kind, engaging, emphatic, compassionate, humble, nurturing, healthy and fit, be a gentleman and a leader - make friends, make an impact, continue to learn, smile, travel, EAT CANOLI's, watch Romantic Comedies, and remember to #StayInThePresentMoment We will miss you."

There will be no funeral for closure. We, who walked our life journeys alongside Barry are blessed.  It is his life we celebrate and the lessons he taught us all.  Barry was a life coach that enriched our lives.

Thank you,
